BACKGROUND: An association between sweetened beverages and several cardiometabolic diseases has been reported, but their association with atrial fibrillation (AF) is unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations between consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), artificially sweetened beverages (ASB), and pure fruit juice (PJ) and risk of consumption with AF risk and further evaluate whether genetic susceptibility modifies these associations. METHODS: A total of 201 856 participants who were free of baseline AF, had genetic data available, and completed a 24-hour diet questionnaire were included. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 9.9 years, 9362 incident AF cases were documented. Compared with nonconsumers, individuals who consumed >2 L/wk of SSB or ASB had an increased risk of AF (HR, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.01-1.20] and HR, 1.20 [95% CI, 1.10-1.31]) in the multivariable-adjusted model. A negative association was observed between the consumption of ≤1 L/wk of PJ and the risk of AF (HR, 0.92 [95% CI, 0.87-0.97]). The highest HRs (95% CIs) of AF were observed for participants at high genetic risk who consumed >2 L/wk of ASB (HR, 3.51 [95% CI, 2.94-4.19]), and the lowest HR were observed for those at low genetic risk who consumed ≤1 L/wk of PJ (HR, 0.77 [95% CI, 0.65-0.92]). No significant interactions were observed between the consumption of SSB, ASB, or PJ and genetic predisposition to AF. CONCLUSIONS: Consumption of SSB and ASB at >2 L/wk was associated with an increased risk for AF. PJ consumption ≤1 L/wk was associated with a modestly lower risk for AF. The association between sweetened beverages and AF risk persisted after adjustment for genetic susceptibility to AF. This study does not demonstrate that consumption of SSB and ASB alters AF risk but rather that the consumption of SSB and ASB may predict AF risk beyond traditional risk factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To investigate the associations of ideal cardiovascular health metrics (ICVHMs) with all-cause mortality among former and current smokers compared with never smokers. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 378,147 participants [mean age (SD) years: 56.3 (8.1); 47.2 % men] were included from the UK Biobank cohort. The ICVHMs were combined Life's simple 7 from the American Heart Association and sleep duration time. The association was explored using COX regression models. During a median follow-up of 13.3 years, we documented 24,594 deaths. Compared with never smokers, among former smokers, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause mortality was 1.82 (95%CI 1.71-1.92) for participants who had ≤2 ICVHMs and 1.03 (0.97-1.10) for participants who had ≥6 ICVHMs; among current smokers, the HRs for mortality were 2.74 (2.60-2.89) and 2.18 (1.78-2.67). The phenomenon was more pronounced among participants younger than 60 years [HR (95%CI), 1.82 (1.71-1.95) for ≤2 ICVHMs vs 1.04 (0.96-1.12) for ≥6 ICVHMs with age ≥60 years and 1.83 (1.62-2.06) vs 0.98 (0.88-1.11) with age <60 years among former smokers; 2.66 (2.49-2.85) vs 2.44 (1.84-3.24) with age ≥60 years and 2.85 (2.62-3.10) vs 1.96 (1.47-2.61) with age <60 years among current smokers]. In addition, the HR for mortality of each 1-number increment in ICVHMs was 0.87 (0.86-0.89) among former smokers and 0.91 (0.89-0.94) among current smokers. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated the importance of adherence to have more ICVHMs in the mortality risk among former smokers, and priority of smoking cessation in current smokers. IMPLICATIONS: Studies have found that former smokers still have higher risks of lung cancer and all-cause mortality than never-smokers. The next question is whether the effects of previous or current smoking could be ameliorated by eight ideal cardiovascular health metrics (ICVHMs). We aim to explore whether ICVHMs may counteract the risk of all-cause mortality among former and current smokers. The results showed that only former smokers with ≥6 ICVHMs exhibited a comparable risk of all-cause mortality with never smokers. Furthermore, current smokers even having ≥6 ICVHMs still exhibited a higher risk of all-cause mortality compared with never smokers.

Wetlands, known as the "kidney of the earth", are an important component of global ecosystems. However, they have been changed under multiple stresses in recent decades, which is especially true in the Yellow River Delta. This study examined the spatiotemporal change characteristics of wetlands in the Yellow River Delta from 1980 to 2020 and predicted detailed wetland changes from 2020 to 2030 with the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model under four scenarios, namely, the natural development scenario (NDS), the farmland protection scenario (FPS), the wetland protection scenario (WPS) and the harmonious development scenario (HDS). The results showed that wetlands increased 709.29 km2 from 1980 to 2020 overall, and the wetland types in the Yellow River Delta changed divergently. Over the past four decades, the tidal flats have decreased, whereas the reservoirs and ponds have increased. The gravity center movement of wetlands differed among the wetland types, with artificial wetlands moving to the northwest and natural wetlands moving to the south. The movement distance of the gravity center demonstrated apparent phase characteristics, and an abrupt change occurred from 2005 to 2010. The PLUS model was satisfactory, with an overall accuracy (OA) value greater than 83.48 % and an figure of merit (FOM) value greater than 0.1164. From 2020 to 2030, paddy fields and tidal flats decreased, whereas natural water, marshes and reservoirs and ponds increased under the four scenarios. The WPS was a relatively ideal scenario for wetlands, and the HDS was an alternative scenario for wetland restoration and food production. In the future, more attention should be paid to restoring natural wetlands to prevent further degradation in the Yellow River Delta. This study provides insights into new understandings of historical and future changes in wetlands and may have implications for wetland ecosystem protection and sustainable development.

BACKGROUND: A healthy lifestyle is an important factor for preventing heart failure. However, the association between outdoor light exposure time and heart failure is still unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association between outdoor light exposure time and the incidence of heart failure. METHODS AND RESULTS: This cohort study included participants from the UK Biobank recruited from 2006 to 2010 who were 40 to 70 years of age and free of heart failure at baseline. The mean follow-up time was 12.61 years. The outdoor light exposure time was self-reported at baseline. A restricted cubic spline was performed to examine the potential nonlinear relationship between outdoor light exposure and the incidence of heart failure. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs. During a mean follow-up of 12.61 years, 13 789 participants were first diagnosed with heart failure. There was a nonlinear (J-shaped) trend between outdoor light time and heart failure risk. Cox proportional hazard regression models showed that, compared with participants who received an average of 1.0 to 2.5 hours of outdoor light per day, those with <1.0 hours or >2.5 hours had a higher risk of heart failure after the model was adjusted for age and sex (<1.0 hours: HR, 1.27 [95% CI, 1.18-1.36]; >2.5 hours: HR, 1.11 [95% CI, 1.07-1.15]). These associations were still significant in the fully adjusted models (<1.0 hours: HR, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.03-1.18]; >2.5 hours: HR, 1.07 [95% CI, 1.03-1.11]). CONCLUSIONS: We found a J-shaped association between outdoor light exposure time and the risk of incident heart failure, suggesting that moderate exposure to outdoor light may be a prevention strategy for heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have shown promise in reducing the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the results are controversial and the underlying metabolic mechanism remains unclear. Emerging evidence implied that SGLT2 inhibitors have extra beneficial metabolic effects on circulating metabolites beyond glucose control, which might play a role in reducing the risk of AF. Hence, our study aimed to investigate the effect of circulating metabolites mediating SGLT2 inhibition in AF by Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: A two-sample and two-step MR study was conducted to evaluate the association of SGLT2 inhibition with AF and the mediation effects of circulating metabolites linking SGLT2 inhibition with AF. Genetic instruments for SGLT2 inhibition were identified as genetic variants, which were both associated with the expression of SLC5A2 gene and glycated hemoglobin level (HbA1c). Positive control analysis on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was conducted to validate the selection of genetic instruments. RESULTS: Genetically predicted SGLT2 inhibition (per 1 SD decrement in HbA1c) was associated with reduced risk of T2DM (odds ratio [OR] = 0.63 [95% CI 0.45, 0.88], P = 0.006) and AF (0.51 [0.27, 0.97], P = 0.039). Among 168 circulating metabolites, two metabolites were both associated with SGLT2 inhibition and AF. The effect of SGLT2 inhibition on AF through the total concentration of lipoprotein particles (0.88 [0.81, 0.96], P = 0.004) and the concentration of HDL particles (0.89 [0.82, 0.97], P = 0.005), with a mediated proportion of 8.03% (95% CI [1.20%, 14.34%], P = 0.010) and 7.59% ([1.09%, 13.34%], P = 0.011) of the total effect, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study supported the association of SGLT2 inhibition with a reduced risk of AF. The total concentration of lipoprotein particles and particularly the concentration of HDL particles might mediate this association. Further mechanistic and clinical studies research are needed to understand the mediation effects of circulating metabolites especially blood lipids in the association between SGLT2 inhibition and AF.

OBJECTIVE: To test the associations of sugar-sweetened beverage, artificially sweetened beverage, and pure fruit/vegetable juice consumption with visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass at baseline and follow-up and to determine whether BMI and genetic risk of VAT mass modified the associations. METHODS: A total of 203,348 participants from UK Biobank with consumption data on three beverages were included. Participants were categorized into nonconsumers and consumers with >0-1, >1-2 and >2 L/week. A sex-specific prediction model was used to calculate VAT mass. A weighted genetic risk score for high VAT mass was calculated. RESULTS: The participants with a sugar-sweetened beverage and artificially sweetened beverage consumption of >2 L/week had the greatest B values [B (95% CI): 24.02 (16.53, 31.51) and 60.81 (52.08, 69.54) in men, respectively; 10.20 (5.92, 14.48) and 24.72 (20.80, 28.64) in women]. Low and moderate intake of pure fruit/vegetable juices showed a significantly inverse association with VAT mass in men [-10.52 (-15.37, -5.67); -6.46 (-11.27, -1.65)] and women [-6.70 (-8.99, -4.41); -5.93 (-8.33, -3.54)]. Regarding changes in VAT mass, participants who consumed >2 L/week of sugar-sweetened beverages and artificially sweetened beverages had greater changes. BMI but not genetic risk modified the associations between beverage intake and VAT mass, which were strengthened in participants with BMI ≥25 kg/m2 for sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverage consumption. CONCLUSIONS: Higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages or artificially sweetened beverages was associated with greater VAT mass regardless of genetic risk. Mild-to-moderate intake of pure fruit/vegetable juices was linked to lower VAT mass.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to test the associations of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), artificially sweetened beverages (ASB), and pure fruit juice (PJ) consumption with the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: Data for 136 277 UK Biobank participants who completed the dietary questionnaire and did not have a history of liver disease were included. Logistic regression was used for the cross-sectional setting where NAFLD was defined by a fatty liver index (FLI) ≥60. Cox proportional hazard regression was used for the longitudinal setting where hospitalized NAFLD was defined as hospital admission with Internationl Classification of Diseases-10 codes K76.0 and K75.8. RESULTS: Compared with 0 L/wk for corresponding beverages, multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for NAFLD in consumption ≤1, 1 to 2, and >2 L/wk were 1.06 (1.02-1.10), 1.24 (1.19-1.29), and 1.42 (1.35-1.49) for SSB; 1.43 (1.37-1.50), 1.73 (1.65-1.82), and 2.37 (2.25-2.50) for ASB, and 0.87 (0.84-0.89), 0.91 (0.88-0.94), and 1.07 (1.02-1.13) for PJ, respectively. Consumption of SSB and ASB were both positively correlated with FLI (P for line < .001). During a median follow-up of 10.2 years, 1043 cases of hospitalized NAFLD were recorded. ASB consumption of 1 to 2 and >2 L/wk was associated with a 22% (0.99-1.50) and 35% (1.11-1.65) increased risk of hospitalized NAFLD, respectively (P for trend = .002). However, the associations of SSB and PJ with the risk of hospitalized NAFLD were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: Consumption of SSB, ASB, and PJ were all related to the risk of NAFLD. Excessive consumption of ASBs was associated with an increased risk of incident hospitalized NAFLD.

AIMS: Recent studies have demonstrated the associations of the consumption of different beverages with cardiometabolic diseases, whereas no studies have investigated such associations in heart failure (HF). Thus, this study aimed to explore the associations of the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs), and pure fruit/vegetable juices (PJs) with the risk of incident HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective cohort study included 209 829 participants in the UK Biobank who completed at least one 24-h diet questionnaire and who were free of baseline HF. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). During a median follow-up of 9.9 years, 4328 incident HF cases were recorded. Compared to corresponding non-consumers, individuals who consumed >2 L/week SSBs or ASBs had an increased risk of HF (HR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.08-1.38 and HR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.16-1.47, respectively) in the multivariate adjusted model. An inverse association was observed between the consumption of >0-1 L/week PJs and the risk of HF (HR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.83-0.98). Additionally, a significant interaction was observed between PJ consumption and sleep duration on HF risk (P for interaction = 0.030). CONCLUSIONS: Increased consumption of SSBs or ASBs may be an independent risk factor for HF, whereas moderate intake of PJs may have a protective effect on HF.


High intake of sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened beverages was associated with an increased risk of heart failure, and moderate intake of pure fruit/vegetable juices was inversely associated with incident heart failure. Consumption of artificially sweetened beverages is a risk factor for heart failure; thus, it may not be a safe alternative to sugar. Moderate consumption of pure fruit/vegetable juices may be a preventive strategy for heart failure.

AIMS: To evaluate the association of cardiovascular health (CVH), measured by Life's Essential 8 score, with the risk of premature mortality and to determine the patterns of CVH-related differences in life expectancy among people with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included 309,789 participants (age 56.6 ± 8.1 years; 46% men) enroled in the UK Biobank. The Life's Essential 8 composite measure consists of four health behaviours (diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, and sleep) and four health factors (BMI, non-HDL cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure), and the maximum CVH score was 100 points. CVH was categorised into low, moderate, and high groups. Premature death was defined as death before the age of 75. Cox proportional hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated, and life expectancy was estimated. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 12.7 years, 13,683 cases of premature death were documented. Compared to participants with low CVH, the multivariable HRs (95% CIs) of premature death were 0.59 (0.56-0.62) and 0.42 (0.39-0.45) for the moderate and high CVH groups, respectively. This association was stronger in participants with T2D compared with those without T2D. At the age of 50 years, compared to low CVH groups, high CVH was associated with a gain of 9.79 (9.70-9.87) and 5.58 (5.48-5.67) additional life years for men with and without T2D, respectively. The corresponding life gain for women with and without T2D was 24.21 (24.13-24.27) and 10.18 (10.10-10.27), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Maintaining an ideal Life's Essential 8 score may provide more benefits for people with T2D than for those without T2D, including a lower risk of premature death and an increased lifespan.

BACKGROUND: Limited studies have explored the association between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass and fat-to-muscle mass ratio (FMR) and mortality. We aimed to evaluate the sex-specific association of VAT and FMR with all-cause and cause-specific mortality by age. METHODS: A total of 438 896 participants (49.8% men, mean age ± standard deviation: 57 ± 8 years for men; 56 ± 8 years for women) were included from the UK Biobank cohort. The nature of VAT was predictive, as obtained by sex-stratified, non-linear prediction models. Fat and muscle mass were estimated using a bioelectrical impedance assessment device. FMR was calculated as the fat mass divided by the muscle mass in the whole body. VAT and FMRs were divided into quintiles in ascending order, and the 3rd quintile was used as the reference. Cox regression analyses were used to estimate the associations between VAT, FMR and mortality. RESULTS: During a median of 12.4 years of follow-up, we documented 29 903 deaths. After adjusting for various covariates, the individuals in the highest quintiles of VAT and FMR had the highest hazard ratios (HRs) of all-cause mortality [1.24 (95% confidence interval: 1.17-1.33) for VAT and 1.24 (1.17-1.31) for FMR in men; and 1.11 (1.03-1.21) for VAT in women], except that the 1st quintile of FMR in women had the greatest HR [1.18 (1.09-1.27)]. Significant interactions were observed in both sexes according to age category (P for interaction < 0.05). Among men <50 years, participants in the 1st and 5th quintiles of VAT and FMR had significantly higher risks of mortality [1.30 (1.02-1.66) and 1.67 (1.27-2.19) in VAT; 1.25 (0.99-1.56) and 1.41 (1.11-1.79) in FMR, respectively]; in women, this phenomenon was observed in the ≥60 age group [1.16 (1.06-1.27) and 1.19 (1.08-1.31) in VAT; 1.18 (1.08-1.29) and 1.11 (1.01-1.22) in FMR, respectively]. VAT showed a linear positive association with mortality in women <60 years and a J-shaped association from respiratory disease in both sexes ≥60 years. FMR showed a linear positive association with mortality from cancer in men <60 years and a J-shaped association with mortality from cause-specific mortality in both sexes ≥60 years, except for mortality from cardiovascular disease in men. CONCLUSIONS: Most associations of VAT and FMR with all-cause mortality were J-shaped and were significantly modified by age status (<50, 50-59 and ≥60 years). The clinical implication is that regarding body composition and VAT mass, different health strategies may be adopted for people of different sexes and ages.

Groundwater level (GWL) recovery in some semiarid regions, attributed to mitigation countermeasures for groundwater depletion, potentially causes nitrate accumulated in the vadose zone to be introduced into the aquifer. However, the extent to which GWL recovery affects interactions between the vadose zone and saturated aquifers, migration pathways of soil nitrogen and groundwater nitrate dynamics have not been explicitly determined. This study established a quasi-3D feedback model for the vadose zone-groundwater coupled system in a typical GWL recovery area and quantitatively evaluated the effects of GWL recovery on nitrate-N leaching fluxes via the vadose zone and groundwater nitrate-N dynamics. Within the framework of the integrated model, both the water/contaminant leaching fluxes and the depth to groundwater were exchanged at each flow time step. The obtained results reveal that the temporal changes in nitrate-N leaching fluxes depended on the behaviors of precipitation, farmland irrigation and lithology of the vadose zone, while its spatial patterns were determined by both the GWL undulation and the vertical profiles of nitrate-N content. Furthermore, the GWL recovery caused the magnitude of the nitrate-N leaching fluxes into the aquifer to increase by 44.4%. Along with the GWL recovery, the phreatic aquifer volume increased by 7.47%, and the nitrate-N mass herein increased by 40.06%, which was largely driven by the nitrate-N leaching flux. Consequently, the average groundwater nitrate-N concentration in the GWL recovery region increased by approximately 2.4 mg/L, apart from the artificial recharge route. This finding suggests that the intensified leaching of soil contaminants, given the circumstances of GWL recovery, has a negative effect on groundwater quality. An appropriate groundwater management scheme is therefore urgently required to achieve an optimal balance between GWL recovery and groundwater environment.

This paper investigated the impacts of various real microplastics (MPs), i.e., polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with different sizes (1000-2000 and 100-200 µm) and different dosages (0.5 and 5% on a dry weight basis), on the toluene removal during the thermally enhanced air injection treatment. First, microscopic tests were carried out to determine the MPs' microstructure and behavior. The PE was mainly a small block, and PET appeared filamentous and sheeted with a larger slenderness ratio. Second, the interactions between MPs and toluene-contaminated soils were revealed by batch adsorption equilibrium experiments and low-field magnetic resonance. The morphological differences and dosage of the MPs impacted soils' total porosity (variation range: 39.2-42.7%) and proportion of the main pores (2-200 µm). Third, the toluene removal during the air injection consisted of compaction, rapid growth, rapid reduction, and tailing stages, and the MPs were regarded as an emerging solid state to affect these removal stages. The final cumulative toluene concentrations of soil-PET mixtures were influenced by total porosity, and those of soil-PE mixtures were controlled by total porosity (influence weight: 0.67) and adsorption capacity (influence weight: 0.33); meanwhile, a self-built comprehensive coefficient of MPs can reflect the relationship between them and cumulative concentrations (correlation coefficient: 0.783).

Current thermal desorption practices of hydrocarbon-contaminated soils focus on remediation efficiency and cost, with little systematic assessment of the reuse value of treated soils. This study evaluated various integrated indices of treatment cost and reuse of treated soils at three desorption temperatures. Various typical engineering and ecological characteristics closely related to soil reusability were selected to analyze the changes in various treated soils, including shear strength, Atterberg limits, particle size distribution, permeability, soil carbon, and soil biomass. A sustainability evaluation tool was developed for the greener disposal of hazardous soils considering both the treatment cost and reuse indices. Such an evaluation led to the conclusion that the contaminated soils treated at 350 °C generated the highest soil reusability with an excellent remediation efficiency. The sensitivity analysis confirmed that the tool had better stability in a common situation where the weight of the remediation cost was heavier than the soil reusability. Meanwhile, published data were input into the tool to validate its applicability under different scenarios. The results were consistent with the qualitative assessment of the literature. The tool can quantitatively select a more sustainable desorption method for the disposal and reuse of hazardous soils.

Soil erosion contributes greatly to nonpoint source pollution (NSP). We built a coastal NSP risk calculation method (CNSPRI) based on the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and geospatial methods. In studies on the formation and transport of coastal NSP, we analysed the pollution impacts on the sea by dividing subbasins into the sea and monitoring the pollutant flux. In this paper, a case study in the Yellow River Delta showed that the CNSPRI could better predict the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) NSP risks. The value of the soil erodibility factor (K) was 0.0377 t h·MJ-1·mm-1, indicating higher soil erodibility levels, and presented an increased trend from the west to the east coast. The NSP risk also showed an increased trend from west to east, and the worst status was found near the Guangli River of the south-eastern region. The contributions of the seven influencing factors to CNSPRI presented an order of vegetation cover > rainfall erosivity > soil content > soil erodibility > flow > flow path > slope. The different roles of source and sink landscapes influenced the pollutant outputs on a subbasin scale. Arable land and saline-alkali land were the two land-use types with the greatest NSP risks. Therefore, in coastal zones, to reduce NSP output risks, we should pay more attention to the spatial distribution of vegetation cover, increase its interception effect on soil loss, and prioritize the improvement of saline-alkali land to reduce the amount of bare land.

Currently, several methods have been adopted for the laboratory preparation of artificial volatile organic compound (VOC) contaminated soils (VCSs). However, it remains unclear whether the prepared contaminated soils are homogenous. In this study, two representative VOCs, toluene and perchloroethylene, were separately mixed with a kaolin-based soil using six preparation methods. Thereafter, the homogeneity and recovery of the contaminated kaolin prepared using these methods were determined and analyzed. The six procedures were quantitatively assessed according to the comprehensive evaluation mathematical model (AHP-CRITIC-TOPSIS), and the final score order of the different procedures was: A > C > E > B > F > D. Additionally, the qualitative evaluation of the procedures was performed based on the phase transformation and mass transfer during the mixing processes. Based on these discussions, method A, which was considered to be optimal, was then adopted for further investigations with various natural soils. The results showed that this optimal method could be applied to natural soils and revealed that the adsorption-related characteristics of natural soils, including total organic carbon, specific surface area, pore volume, pH, plastic limit, particle size, and mineral composition, influenced the homogeneity and recovery through mass transfer. In addition, it was also observed that the chemical properties of VOCs, including molecular structure, vapor pressure, and the octanol/water partition coefficient, could also affect the effectiveness of sample recovery. Through this study, researchers can prepare VCSs with excellent homogeneity and low loss rates to conduct standardized tests for technology development.

This study investigated toluene adsorption on natural soils. The linear partition model was found to represent the adsorption isotherm well (R2 = 0.958-0.994), compared with the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.901-0.991). Therefore, the coefficient, Kd, of the linear model indicated the adsorption capacity of soils A to F. Traditionally, Kd and the total organic carbon (TOC) content have a good linear relationship. However, this relationship was weak (correlation coefficient (r) = 0.689) when TOC values (8.43-12.9 mg/g) were low and close. To correct this deviation, this study investigated the influences of physicochemical properties, such as special surface area, mineral composition, functional groups, pH, and potentials. As soils B and C consisted of a large amount of active clayey minerals (69.4% kaolinite and 79.3% nacrite, respectively) and rich functional groups, they demonstrated the strongest adsorption capacity. Additionally, the r for pH-Kd, zeta potential-Kd, and redox potential-Kd were high, at 0.806, 0.914, and 0.932, respectively. To explore adsorption mechanisms, the adsorption thermodynamic parameter (enthalpy) was used initially to determine the forces. Combined with the analysis of soil properties, the mechanisms identified were hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen-pi bonding, involving co-adsorption with water molecules. Based on all studies, the properties were quantified and simplified by the plastic limit (PL), and TOC was simplified by soil organic matter (SOM). Then, PL and SOM were weighted by the entropy-weight method to obtain the determination factor, DF, a logarithmic parameter to replace TOC. Finally, a new model describing toluene adsorption on natural soils was established and expressed as Kd = 4.80 + 3.53DF. This new model had significantly improved the correlation between Kd and TOC (r = 0.933) and expanded the engineering adaptability.

The essential nutrition from microbiome is harvested through xenophagy. As an immune effector, xenophagy will capture any microorganisms that touch the epithelial cells of our gastrointestinal tract, degrade them and turn them into nutrients for the use of our body.

Vegetation in arid and semi-arid regions frequently exists in patches, which can be effectively mapped by remote sensing. However, not all satellite images are suitable to detect the decametric-scale vegetation patches because of low spatial resolution. This study compared the capability of the first Gaofen Satellite (GF-1), the second Gaofen Satellite (GF-2), and China-Brazil Earth Resource Satellite 4 (CBERS-04) panchromatic images for mapping quasi-circular vegetation patches (QVPs) with K-Means (KM) and object-based example-based feature extraction with support vector machine classification (OEFE) in the Yellow River Delta, China. Both approaches provide relatively high classification accuracy with GF-2. For all five images, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) for area, perimeter, and perimeter/area ratio were smaller using the KM than the OEFE, indicating that the results from the KM are more similar to ground truth. Although the mapped results of the QVPs from finer-spatial resolution images appeared more accurate, accuracy improvement in terms of QVP area, perimeter, and perimeter/area ratio was limited, and most of the QVPs detected only by finer-spatial resolution imagery had a more than 40% difference with the actual QVPs in these three parameters. Compared with the KM approach, the OEFE approach performed better for vegetation patch shape description. Coupling the CBERS-04 with the OEFE approach could suitably map the QVPs (overall accuracy 75.3%). This is important for ecological protection managers concerned about cost-effectiveness between image spatial resolution and mapping the QVPs.
